Geelong Photographer wins Awards

Not everyone gets to photograph a wedding in a castle. But late last year, I was fortunate enough to be able to do just that. It was never going to be easy, I mean, just because I had a gorgeous bride with a beautiful dress and in a stunning location didn’t really mean it was going to be easy. I had hoped to visit the location prior to the wedding, but being that it was just before Christmas, there was no way I could be two places at once. So, with a bit of help from my old friend Mr. Google, I set about planning Giselle and Giovanni’s wedding day. Some of the photographs I saw of the location gave me ideas, others just confused the matter as there was photos where people had tagged my location, but in actual fact the photo had been taken elsewhere (nothing like keeping me on my toes huh). After a lovely service and some cafe photos at near an old prison, we made the trip across town to our location. Whilst I had a list of spots that I had planned to photograph the bride and groom, the main idea I had was the spiral staircase. So, after a few wedding portraits outside, we headed inside. Wow, that’s all I can say. This place is a dream for any photographer.  Whilst it doesn’t look like it from the photo, I actually had to go up 5 flights of stairs to get to the top. It was so high up that in order to get the brides face in the photo, she had to hold her head back as far as she could and hold the pose for a couple of minutes. Everything was checked and fixed before I got her to tilt her head back..the dress, the hands, the expression on her face and even the spot where her groom was going to kiss her. So up I went. I was that high up that I couldn’t really see the expression on her face. So I had to take a few photos, just to make sure I had one that was perfect. I knew as soon as I posed the couple that I was on to something, but it wasn’t until a few days later when I was able to sit down and play with the image in photoshop that it came to life. So much so that I had to enter it into the SWPP (Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers) awards in the United Kingdom. Now to be 100% honest, I entered the image and was looking forward to seeing the result, but I kind of forgot about it as I was busy with other things. So imagine my surprise when I saw on the SWPP Facebook page that it had not only won a Gold Award, but it also won the Judges Choice Award for the best image. There were one thousand entries, only 27 Gold’s awarded and only one Judges Choice!! Then, just to add some icing on the cake, the same image was also awarded a Silver at the Victorian Awards for the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers. Hat trick completed. Not a bad effort for a small Geelong based studio if I do say so myself. First Geelong photographer to have ever won a Gold and Judges Choice Award at the SWPP and one of only a select few Australians to have ever won this as well. One month on and I’m still smiling! America, you’re next..watch out!!

Geelong Styled Wedding Photography

I was lucky enough to have worked with some very talented ladies over the weekend for a styled wedding photography session. Megan from that blonde chick and Simone from La De Da Events helped in styling a photographic session. It was kind of a chance for all of us to try something new without the pressure of an actual wedding day. There are many times when I would love to try something new, but a wedding isn’t the right place to be experimenting! So over the next few weeks, you’ll be seeing the results of the shoot. As always, Megans hair styles just blew me away. A mega talented stylist whom I can recommend to any bride to be.  So this was a little bit different for me as usually I include the groom as much as I can on an actual wedding day, but this was all about the bride! Also a big thanks to the girls who helped make the day happen, Imogen and Emily..great brides and to Secrets Jewellery of Melbourne for supplying the jewellery for the girls. They’re in the Royal Arcade for anyone wanting to see their stunning range of jewellery. By the way, it was good of the Geelong Advertiser to runs  short story on our shoot today!!

Geelong photographer- Wedding

This weeks wedding video is of Anthony and Jessica’s wedding. Their wedding took place in Geelong and, as you will see in the clip, some beautiful wedding portraits were captured in and around the Geelong waterfront. Even though it was quite a chilly day (It was June after all) the bridal party had a ball. A special thanks goes to Panache cafe who were kind enough to let us use their location for some photos of the bride and groom while the rest of the bridal party enjoyed a nice warm coffee! The wedding ended with the couple celebrating their reception at Capri receptions in North Geelong. I hope you enjoy this video that captures their wedding day.

Angela & Robert’s wedding day

There are some weddings where it doesn’t matter what happens, you just can’t wipe the smile off the brides face, and this was one of those weddings. From memory, I think the top temperature that day hit about 42 degrees, but I didn’t hear anyone complain. Everyone in the bridal party was having too much fun, after all, isn’t that what weddings are all about? Following is Angela and Robert’s wedding day as told by Angela.

Briefly tell us a bit about your wedding day
It was a hot day on our wedding day. We got married at St Mary of the Angels Basilica (Geelong) and reception was at Capri receptions. I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face I was on such a high knowing that I was getting ready to go and marry the love of my life.
What was your favourite part of the day?
Our  favourite part was when we did photos. I normally hate having photos taken of me but Riccardo made me feel so relaxed and comfortable and made it fun.
We had a ball.
Why was it important to you to select a professional photographer for your wedding day?
It was important because pictures tell a thousand stories they are always looked at and it  brings back memories of our special day  and Riccardo is such a talented photographer he captures all the special moments.
How did you select Photography by Riccardo to record your wedding ?
I knew Riccardo was the best in town by word of mouth.
When I went to book the reception I saw a photo on their wall. It was of a bride and groom and Riccardo had taken the shot, I absolutely  loved it and that just
Made me want Riccardo to do our photos so I rang him that day and meet in his studio that week and booked him I was so happy that we had him booked, my husband was too.
What advice have you got for bride and grooms to be ?
Don’t worry about any little things that might go wrong it all comes together in the end.just focus on the fact that you are marrying your soul mate,women/ man of your dreams.
Tell your readers how you felt when you first saw your wedding photos?
We were  blown away,  they were absolutely amazing we thought Wow  and looking at the album brought us back to our wedding day. All we can say is amazing thank you so much Riccardo for your hard and amazing work .
We highly recommend you:)

What my brides are saying.

It’s always a nice thing when a bride and groom thank you for the work that you’ve put into their wedding day. So many people need to come together all at the same time to make a wedding day happen, but it’s usually just the photographer (and sometimes videographer) which spend most of the day with the bride and groom. So you tend to become friends with them as you’ve shared a fair amount of time on a very special day in their lives. So when you receive a thank you note like the following, you realise how much it means to them. This came from a couple who I was lucky enough to work with in February this year. A really hot day mind you..just thought I’d throw that in!

“We just wanted to thank you for your hard work and effort in photographing our wedding. You were amazing the whole way through our wedding planing.

At the very beginning of organising our budget for our wedding, my husband and I sat down and agreed that we couldn’t put a budget on a photographer. The reason being was we both agreed that you couldn’t put a price on making sure our wedding day was captured perfectly. We had heard too many horror stories. Including the most important person in a brides life missed out on having a professional photo on the day, due to the photographer being unorganised and inexperienced.

Me being new to Geelong I relied on word of mouth. When I asked around your name Riccardo popped up many many times and I am truly grateful that.

Riccardo, you were professional, fun and really listened to what we wanted in our photos. Best of all you delivered. We felt comfortable that you had it under control and that’s exactly what you did.

Brides to be, I cannot stress enough the importance of having a fantastic photographer to photograph the biggest day of your life. Our advise, don’t sell yourself short on something like this. After all it’s true what they say, your big day goes so quickly and your professional photos are the one thing that you will look back on, show your family/kids and display in your home, for the rest of your life.” Maz & Andrew

Photo of the day 2nd April

I’ve just been playing around with a new technique I’ve come up with. I actually took this photograph at Jennas wedding last month. When I saw the lighting that I had available, the new technique came to mind and, by the looks of the below photo, I think it worked. Amazingly enough, I saw another perfect photo for the new technique later that day at the winery where they got married just outside of Geelong, but I think I might add that photo to my Instagram page at a later date. I’m sure that when I showed the bride this photo on the back of my camera she was probably thinking…hmmm…ok. But now you know what I was up to hey Jenna!!

Photo of the day

Here’s something that I’ve been wanting to do for a while! It seems that I’m either always talking about the last wedding or portrait I’ve photographed, but in actual fact, there’s so much more that happens around here than just the last wedding or portrait. In order to give my clients their perfect album or wall portrait, every image is worked on for quite some time. I don’t do quick. My images are art and art takes time. Michelangelo didn’t paint the Sistine Chapel in one weekend after all! So from now on, you’re regularly going to see the Photo of the day. This could be a photo I’m currently working on or maybe a photo I’m just trying a new technique within or maybe it’s just a photo I like and have dug out of my archives to share with you all. Which ever way, I hope you all enjoy it. For those of you who follow me on Facebook you’ll be familiar with the Photo of the day album, now regular visitors to my blog can also see what’s going on.  So today I’ll start with a photo that was taken a few years ago during a shoot for Bridal House in Geelong. Love that dress!!

Wet Weather Weddings

I often hear photographers whinging about wet weather. “the rain spoilt the couples wedding photos” Really? Truth of the matter is that regardless of the weather, amazing wedding photos can be captured any time. The wedding I photographed on Saturday is proof. Storms were predicted for Saturday, but according to the weather forecast, they wouldn’t occur until later in the day. Just as the bride was ready to go and meet her groom, we received a small shower. We waited about ten minutes and it seemed to clear, so on with the show we went. We were at the beautiful Wyndam resort in Torquay (about a 15 minute drive from Geelong) and just as the Bride and Groom started exchanging vows, the heavens opened up. Not just a shower, but as you can see from the photo, some fairly serious rain! They both took it in their stride, nothing was going to stop the most important part of the day. It’s a wedding service that no one will ever forget! But there is a silver lining to every cloud and shortly after the service, we headed into Geelong. I’ll write more about this wedding in a later post, but have a look at the second photograph that I’ve posted below. The weather Gods looked down at us and gave us this spectacular sight to work with. We kind of forgave them for the earlier downpour and ended up with some amazing wedding photography that this couple will treasure forever.

Why using a Professional Photographer can change your life.

I was recently at a Bridal expo here in Geelong and got talking to a bride. During the conversation, she asked me if during the day, I’d mind photographing her with her Mum and Dad. I thought it was a bit of a strange question, I mean, isn’t that a given that I would photograph her with her parents? This particular bride had been a bridesmaid in another wedding and the couple had decided to use a friend who “did weddings on the weekend”. During the day, the brides mother had asked that she be photographed with her daughter only to be told  “that’s not something that I normally do” by the particular photographer. So the brides mum missed out on having a photo with her daughter on their special day.  This actually got me thinking about a couple whose wedding I photographed mid last year. The bride recently lost her mum to cancer and they contacted me to ask if I could supply a few images from the wedding to be used during the slide show at the funeral because her mum “had a wonderful day that day”. Imagine if I hadn’t taken those photos. This couple’s album and their photos have now become priceless. I always tell my couples this, after the wedding your food will be forgotten, the bridal gown will be packed away never to be worn again and you may not ever sit in a limo again, but you will always have your wedding album to bring back those memories. At some point in your life though, that album will become priceless.
