Photographing kids and animals

I keep getting told that I’m either brave or crazy for taking on a project that involves photographing kids and their dogs…but I love it! I had a half page story recently in the Geelong Advertiser, and this is what they had to say:

“The saying goes, never work with animals or children, but this Geelong Photographer missed the memo. “I’ve heard that joke from everyone who’s come in for a photo,” said Riccardo Gentiluomo, who is creating a book filled with pictures of children and their dogs. Mr Gentiluomo is hoping to capture 100 raw moments between youngsters and their furry friends for his Tails of Geelong book, which doubles as a fundraiser for the RSPCA. He is almost halfway there snapping pugs, huskies, staffies and French bulldogs playing with their humans, and wants at least fifty more signed up by next month. He said the trick to capturing the perfect moment was patience and perseverance. “They don’t know what you want, the dog doesn’t know what you want, so the best way is letting them play and catching the shot in between” he said.  “you can bribe kids to a certain extent, but with dogs if you give them a treat, all they want is another treat.” Mr Gentiluomo hopes he can raise about $5000 for the RSPCA through the $49 photography fee from each client, who will be immortalised in the book along with a cute fact about the pair. People can register on Mr Gentiluomo’s website www.riccardo.com.au/dogs ”

I am still looking for kids with the dogs to try and reach the goal of 100 dogs and there is just one month to go, so click on the above link to register. I’ve been photographing German Shepherds, Pugs, French Bulldogs, Staffies, Bernese Mountain Dog, a Chihuahua and a couple of border collies…but there is room for more. So no matter what type of dog you have, you’re welcome to come in and have a portrait taken. I’ve also been asked by a few people if they can just bring their dog in as their kids aren’t kids anymore and the answer is yes. They obviously won’t be in the book because the title of the book is “Tails of Geelong, Kids and their Dogs” but there is no reason why we can’t do a special portrait of your fur baby.

Wedding photography by Riccardo

March is generally the busiest month in Geelong for wedding photography, and this year has been no different. I have been fortunate enough to have been able to photograph in some stunning locations this year. Everywhere from beautiful beaches to mansions. And I can honestly say,  myself and the bridal parties had an absolute awesome time in the process! One of my favourite things as a photographer is when I get to create a piece of art for my couples, something that they will treasure for years to come. Going with this philosophy, I have introduced a new package into my wedding collection. Something that is affordable to every bridal couple yet at the same time, gives them a unique piece of art from their wedding day. As with all my wedding products, the new piece will be hand manufactured in Italy. I will have the new album and package at the upcoming bridal wedding expo, so if you’re going to be there on the day, make sure you pop over and have a look. What makes this album so unique? Well, wedding photography (for 95% of photographers that are around at the moment) follows a formula. After the service, you quickly dash to as many locations in and around Geelong as you possibly can to get as many photographs as possible and quickly dash back to the reception….there’s a lot of rushing around. Do you really want to remember your wedding for all the rushing around? Or would you rather remember it for the art work that hangs on your walls for years to come? I know which I’d rather have. The new album is a game changer and takes the focus off the rushing around and puts the emphasis on the art. Of course, this is just one of four personally designed packages that I have available and you really need to see which is best suited for your wedding day.  So, if you’re planning a wedding and you want to find out more, Contact the studio to organise a chat. As this product is exclusive to Photography by Riccardo, it will be available to persons visiting the studio only. Below are a few images from recent weddings.

Newborn photography Geelong

This is one of my most favourite things to photograph, a newborn child in their fathers arms. I don’t think that first time parents realise how quickly children grow and change. I often get asked when the best time to photograph a newborn baby after birth is and I always give the parents this guideline, if you want the real newborn baby look, then try and get it within the first five days and certainly no later than two weeks after the birth. With some new mums now staying in hospital for the first five days, the best advice I can give you is to contact the studio at least two weeks prior to your due date so we can make arrangements for me to visit the hospital. There is so much happening in the days after the birth, that many parents that I talk to afterwards say that they would’ve loved to have had a photograph of their child, but simply forgot.  Photography by Riccardo is happy to schedule a hospital visit for you, so those first few days in your new babys life aren’t missed.  Plus, as an added bonus, newborn hospital visits at either the Geelong hospital or St. John of God hospital are free. You can also register yourself or a friend at my new Baby Club page on Facebook. Baby club allows you to send a gift certificate to a friend who is expecting a baby as a gift from you to have their portraits taken. Best of all, it doesn’t cost you a thing or the first $50 of the Gift Certificate! Simply fill in their details and we’ll send them a $50 gift certificate totally free, no catches or hidden costs. The certificate states that it is a gift from you and nowhere does it say that it’s a free service.  You can register yourself if you’re expecting as well and, if you have any questions, you can contact me Here. I have had people ask if they can send gift certificates of greater value and the answer is yes, you just need to contact the studio so that this can be arranged.

Geelong Photographer – Child Portraits

For the last year or so I’ve been playing with new designs and styles with my newborn, baby and child portraits. I’ve been a bit hesitant to show the new style, simply because I wanted to perfect it before releasing them. And anyway, good things take time don’t they!  But now, I’m close, so close in fact that I am now in the final stages of photographing and designing my samples. Because some of the new styles are so specific, they can only be photographed at certain times. Add to that the new type of paper that I will be using for these portraits and I now have something very different and exclusive. Over the next few months you’ll be seeing the future of portraits come to life on this page. Something that Geelong has never seen and only at Photography by Riccardo.

Newborn and Baby Portrait Video

My latest creation, a short clip showcasing some of my newborn and child portrait photography. I’m really proud of the fact that I capture memories for families that last forever. Seeing a child grow from a newborn to a toddler and beyond has made me realise the importance of my profession. Most of the images you see were photographed in my Geelong based studio, but there are also some that were taken at various locations. I offer a premium service to clients wanting to have their newborn photographed in the first days after their child is born. Feel free to Contact me if you would like more information regarding this service.  I hope you enjoy watching this, maybe even grab a box of tissues before you press play!

Geelong photographer-Rebecca & Tim’s wedding

When people think wedding photography in Geelong, they automatically think of the waterfront. Truth is, that’s just the tip of the iceberg with stunning locations in and around the town. Rebecca and Tim’s wedding took place just out of Geelong in Little River, and what a stunning location they chose! The spot had everything, beautiful open landscapes, a home that was just stunning for their wedding portraits and a bridal party that just wanted to have fun. At the end of the day, we all had a ball and, as this short video of their wedding album shows you, we ended up with some amazing photography that they will now treasure for the rest of their lives. Rebecca and Tim now have a gorgeous little girl who I have been fortunate enough to also photograph. I can only imagine what Matilda will one day say when she see’s her mummy and daddy’s wedding album!!

Wet Weather Weddings

I often hear photographers whinging about wet weather. “the rain spoilt the couples wedding photos” Really? Truth of the matter is that regardless of the weather, amazing wedding photos can be captured any time. The wedding I photographed on Saturday is proof. Storms were predicted for Saturday, but according to the weather forecast, they wouldn’t occur until later in the day. Just as the bride was ready to go and meet her groom, we received a small shower. We waited about ten minutes and it seemed to clear, so on with the show we went. We were at the beautiful Wyndam resort in Torquay (about a 15 minute drive from Geelong) and just as the Bride and Groom started exchanging vows, the heavens opened up. Not just a shower, but as you can see from the photo, some fairly serious rain! They both took it in their stride, nothing was going to stop the most important part of the day. It’s a wedding service that no one will ever forget! But there is a silver lining to every cloud and shortly after the service, we headed into Geelong. I’ll write more about this wedding in a later post, but have a look at the second photograph that I’ve posted below. The weather Gods looked down at us and gave us this spectacular sight to work with. We kind of forgave them for the earlier downpour and ended up with some amazing wedding photography that this couple will treasure forever.

Newborn hospital visits

I thought I’d share something a little different with everyone today. This image was taken only a few days after little Aiden was born in St. John of God Hospital, Geelong. This is always such a special time in a family’s life, when their newborn baby arrives into the world. Capturing the special moment is something that many people forget to do, purely for the simple reason that all of a sudden, there’s such a huge change to their life! If you are expecting a baby and would like to pre-organise a hospital visit to have these special moments captured, then please contact the studio a couple of weeks prior to your due date. The photography session usually lasts no longer than about 15 minutes to minimise disturbing the newborn. They will turn out to be the most precious 15 minutes of your life though once your newborns first days of life are recorded forever.

Merry Christmas

Is it me or has this year just flown? It seems just yesterday that I was wishing everyone a Merry Christmas last year. Anyway, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all my clients, past, present and future. I’ve been very fortunate to be able to work with many amazing people who appreciate fine photography. It’s always such a huge sense of fulfilment when a couple pick up their wedding album or a family picks up their portraits. I’ll be taking a few days off over the Christmas and New Year period, but I’ll still be out scouting some new locations in and around Geelong as I have some new ideas that I’m working on for both weddings as well as portraits. There’s also something new coming for past clients in 2014.  So if you’re a past client, even from 15 years ago, keep an eye out on my Facebook or Google+ pages in early 2014.  So now I’d like to wish all my clients, friends and followers of my blog and other social media pages a very Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous 2014. Riccardo
