Photographing kids and animals

I keep getting told that I’m either brave or crazy for taking on a project that involves photographing kids and their dogs…but I love it! I had a half page story recently in the Geelong Advertiser, and this is what they had to say:

“The saying goes, never work with animals or children, but this Geelong Photographer missed the memo. “I’ve heard that joke from everyone who’s come in for a photo,” said Riccardo Gentiluomo, who is creating a book filled with pictures of children and their dogs. Mr Gentiluomo is hoping to capture 100 raw moments between youngsters and their furry friends for his Tails of Geelong book, which doubles as a fundraiser for the RSPCA. He is almost halfway there snapping pugs, huskies, staffies and French bulldogs playing with their humans, and wants at least fifty more signed up by next month. He said the trick to capturing the perfect moment was patience and perseverance. “They don’t know what you want, the dog doesn’t know what you want, so the best way is letting them play and catching the shot in between” he said.  “you can bribe kids to a certain extent, but with dogs if you give them a treat, all they want is another treat.” Mr Gentiluomo hopes he can raise about $5000 for the RSPCA through the $49 photography fee from each client, who will be immortalised in the book along with a cute fact about the pair. People can register on Mr Gentiluomo’s website www.riccardo.com.au/dogs ”

I am still looking for kids with the dogs to try and reach the goal of 100 dogs and there is just one month to go, so click on the above link to register. I’ve been photographing German Shepherds, Pugs, French Bulldogs, Staffies, Bernese Mountain Dog, a Chihuahua and a couple of border collies…but there is room for more. So no matter what type of dog you have, you’re welcome to come in and have a portrait taken. I’ve also been asked by a few people if they can just bring their dog in as their kids aren’t kids anymore and the answer is yes. They obviously won’t be in the book because the title of the book is “Tails of Geelong, Kids and their Dogs” but there is no reason why we can’t do a special portrait of your fur baby.

Here’s a related article on photographing newborns

Fathers Day Portraits

As promised in my earlier blog post, here is my fathers day portrait promotion. Normally, my promotions include extras that are added to each package. But this year, I’m doing things a little different. To take advantage of this promotion, you must book prior to the 6th of September. Every person that books prior to Fathers day will receive a $100 Gift Certificate to put towards any portrait products that I have available. You can upgrade your package, add extra prints or, as one family did this morning, have the Gift Certificate made out to a friend so that their friend can come in and experience a portrait session. I leave that totally up to you. I know a few of my regular clients have used this opportunity to book and then use the portraits as gifts for the grandparents. A lot of people tend to forget the grandparents and tend to give them gifts that never get used. I remember having a grandparent come in months ago wanting to look at their daughters family portrait session so they could order their own portraits!! (so keep that in mind!) So, how does the promotion work? Simply contact the studio, either by email or telephone, and book a session. Sessions are limited!! I like to personalise my portrait sessions, and this can’t be done if I have three or more in one day. In order to keep the session unique to your family, a maximum of two session times are available each day.  Generally, once I know the age and in some cases sleep patterns of the children involved, a time is then set. With the weather the way it is, if we are photographing a newborn baby, I would suggest we photograph in my  studio but, if the children are a bit older, you generally have the option to either have the session in the studio or at any location in and around Geelong. I have a list of popular locations so it’s just a matter of us organising a time and spot for it to be done.  If you are wanting the portraits back before fathers day, then book in a time as soon as possible so I can guarantee the portraits will be back on time. As with all my portraits now, as an added bonus, you automatically receive a lifetime warranty on all wall portraits.

You can contact or book your session by clicking Here

Newborn photography Geelong

Before I became a parent, I used to hear parents always comment on how quick their  newborn child had grown and how in a wink of an eye their baby was at school. My first thought was always, time doesn’t go any faster or any slower for anyone…so I don’t get it. Fast forward a few years and now I’m a parent as well and boy oh boy was I very wrong,  they do grow really quickly!! It feels like one minute you’re in the delivery room waiting for this new little baby to emerge and then you blink and they’re crawling and trying to walk and talk. So I made it a point when my daughter was born to photograph her every three months. Apart from the thousands of photos we’ve taken with our small camera and phone, every three months we bring her into the studio and do a portrait session with her. She made me work for it the very first time we did this, but now she enjoys it, it’s more like a game than a photo session. Ok, I totally understand, not everyone is going to want to have their child photographed every three months (mainly because any “spare” time that parents have involves trying to catch up on things!) But, considering how precious your little child is, taking four hours over the course of a year to have them photographed, isn’t a lot of time. I can guarantee it’ll be time well spent.  So drawing on inspiration from my daughter, I was able to create something that I think is pretty unique in Geelong. The ability to record a child’s life over a period of time. Being that every moment you have with your child is precious, what if you could pause a moment? Not literally of course (I wish I could though!!) but pause in the sense of being able to hold on to a memory that your child creates forever. So I came up with my Moment in Time sessions. This is something that you really need to see to fully understand how beautiful and precious it really is. Portraits and albums that capture your child in a very special and unique way. You are more than welcome to visit the studio to view these beautiful products (appointments advisable, you can click Here to make a time), but hopefully this short video clip can help explain what I mean. For those of you that aren’t aware, my albums are hand made in Italy by some very clever people who use some very beautiful materials to put the albums together. That’s even more reason to come in and have a look. And, if all that wasn’t enough, all my wall portraits now come with a lifetime guarantee. That means that even if you damage the portrait by accident, you’re covered! How many places offer that sort of guarantee??  I hope you enjoy viewing this video clip as much as I enjoyed capturing the special moments in this child’s life.

Remember, if you want to stay in touch with all that’s happening at the studio, you can join my Facebook page or simply click Here and fill out the form so I can email you when any specials are happening.

Styled vintage wedding Geelong

I was fortunate enough to be part of a styled vintage bridal shoot in Geelong recently. This is a bit different to a wedding day in that the hair and make up stylists are on hand as is the dress supplier and the florist. Normally on a wedding day, it’s usually just myself and the videographer. Now I know what most of you are thinking, not another vintage wedding. I know, I know, that’s the trend at the moment..that and cutting off the couples heads (really??), which believe me, you will never see one of this photos here on this blog..ever!! Our vintage shoot was a little different though because even though that was the feel that we all set out to achieve, I was allowed to do whatever I liked. Now that’s the sort of shoot I like!! So basically I could put my own spin on the shoot. Perfect!! So I could photograph with vintage in mind, but add my own touch of Hollywood #glamour to the photos.  The location was  chosen, very carefully mind you, and we headed down to Oakdene. For those of you that don’t know where this is, it’s in Wallington, about 20 minutes out of Geelong.  There were so many spots to choose from where I could set up, I think I could’ve spent the whole weekend photographing different looks there!! The flowers were designed by Shelley from Beachside Blooms. They fitted the look perfectly we were after perfectly. Any wonder Shelley and her team have won the Australian Bridal Industry awards multiple times over the last few years.   The dresses were supplied by the girls at Embrace Bridal Boutique. Have you popped in and had a look at their range of bridal gowns?? Stunning…that’s all that really needs to be said.  It was great to work with such talented people. Hair and make up was done by the girls at Ivy Creations hair on Harbour and finally, what would a wedding shoot be like if I wasn’t working with my good friend Mio from Video Vault. After having worked alongside Mio for many years at weddings, I know the shot he needs and he knows that it’s usually best to keep out of my way on a wedding day, so we work perfectly together!! haha..only joking Mio!! You can see some of Mio’s wedding video’s on his Facebook page. So below are a few images from our shoot. I hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed creating them. More images will follow along with Mio’s video of the days shoot.

Geelong Newborn Portraits

One of the most amazing things I’ve been lucky enough to photograph this year are newborn portraits. Photographing a child that’s just a few days old and seeing the love that the new parents have for the child is definitely one of those experiences that stays with you forever. Ultimately I also get to see the child grow from a newborn to a toddler. Knowing that my portraits will grace the walls of my clients for many years is one of the most fulfilling things that a professional photographer can experience. Having been a photographer in Geelong for many years now, occasionally you also see those newborns out and about with their parents as primary school students!! Where does the time go? Here I want to share with you an image from a portrait session I photographed not long ago. Little Isla was only three days old when this was taken, so a new experience has begun in seeing her grow. I have not long introduced a new product into my range. Something that’s fairly unique to each family because it can be stylised to suit their own taste. As you may know, all of my Art Books are hand made in Italy, so I wanted a product that would give people something more than a wall portrait. I now have available my new Baby Book. It can be designed from one portrait session or, as a few of my clients have chosen to do, design it over the course of multiple sessions. It’s a bit difficult to grasp the concept of the Baby Book, so you are more than welcome to visit the studio and have a look for yourself. You can also register your details Here to receive an invitation to the new product launch coming soon.

Wet Weather Weddings

I often hear photographers whinging about wet weather. “the rain spoilt the couples wedding photos” Really? Truth of the matter is that regardless of the weather, amazing wedding photos can be captured any time. The wedding I photographed on Saturday is proof. Storms were predicted for Saturday, but according to the weather forecast, they wouldn’t occur until later in the day. Just as the bride was ready to go and meet her groom, we received a small shower. We waited about ten minutes and it seemed to clear, so on with the show we went. We were at the beautiful Wyndam resort in Torquay (about a 15 minute drive from Geelong) and just as the Bride and Groom started exchanging vows, the heavens opened up. Not just a shower, but as you can see from the photo, some fairly serious rain! They both took it in their stride, nothing was going to stop the most important part of the day. It’s a wedding service that no one will ever forget! But there is a silver lining to every cloud and shortly after the service, we headed into Geelong. I’ll write more about this wedding in a later post, but have a look at the second photograph that I’ve posted below. The weather Gods looked down at us and gave us this spectacular sight to work with. We kind of forgave them for the earlier downpour and ended up with some amazing wedding photography that this couple will treasure forever.

Lovely email I received

I thought I’d share part of an email I received earlier today. I don’t usually share email, but this kind of stood out. This couple drove down to Geelong from Melbourne during the recent heat wave to meet me. Their wedding is later on this year down on the coast. I’m sure they’ll be more than happy of the weather that day is a bit milder than the 42 degrees we had the day they came down!

“Hi Riccardo, I wanted to confirm the booking of our wedding with you. I have to say that after spending countless hours searching through websites, we both agreed that nothing else we saw really came close to your quality of work. As Paul said, there are loads of photographers but there’s only one Riccardo. We both can’t wait to have you as part of our day. Jennifer and Paul.

Merry Christmas

Is it me or has this year just flown? It seems just yesterday that I was wishing everyone a Merry Christmas last year. Anyway, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all my clients, past, present and future. I’ve been very fortunate to be able to work with many amazing people who appreciate fine photography. It’s always such a huge sense of fulfilment when a couple pick up their wedding album or a family picks up their portraits. I’ll be taking a few days off over the Christmas and New Year period, but I’ll still be out scouting some new locations in and around Geelong as I have some new ideas that I’m working on for both weddings as well as portraits. There’s also something new coming for past clients in 2014.  So if you’re a past client, even from 15 years ago, keep an eye out on my Facebook or Google+ pages in early 2014.  So now I’d like to wish all my clients, friends and followers of my blog and other social media pages a very Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous 2014. Christmas 2013

I was sitting at home last night and looking through a World Vision catalogue. All the little kids had such huge smiles on their faces and looked so happy, even though they have little or nothing. So I started thinking what  could  a photographer in Geelong do to help someone on the other side of the World? Every Christmas I run some sort of portrait promotion but this year I thought I’d try and make a difference to their lives. $10 from every Gift Voucher sold between the 1st and 24th of December will be donated to World Vision. Ideally, I would LOVE to raise the $1425 needed for clean running water. Depending on how much support I receive, I may even continue this until the $1425 is raised.  The final tally and receipt that World Vision send will be posted here for all that helped to see.

Courtney & Denis

We were fortunate enough to have a beautiful Winters day for Denis and Courtney’s wedding day. I have known Denis’ family for many many years, so it was also good for me to see them all again. What better place in Geelong to get married in that St. Mary’s Basilica. Courtney wore a stunning gown by Raffaele Ciuca of Fitzroy. We were fortunate enough to be able to photograph in Courtney’s old school, Geelong College. The architecture of the building made for a stunning backdrop. We then headed off to the Geelong Waterfront, which has a huge array of different spots to photograph couples. Being that it was a bit chilly, the bridal party stopped in at The Edge for a few drinks. I took advantage of this opportunity to get a nice photo of all the bridal party enjoying themselves. I absolutely love that image, everyone laughing and having fun, the way that all my weddings are designed to be! Finally we headed back to the Croatian Centre for the reception.

Thanks Courtney and Denis for choosing me as your wedding photographer and making me part of your special day.

Riccardo.
